Spanish Lessons in Primary
SPANISH IN PRIMARY YEARS
At Bridge Learning Campus, learning a foreign language provides an opening to other cultures. Lessons should foster pupils’ curiosity, develop their confidence and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in Spanish and to understand and respond both in speech and writing. Spanish should provide a foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.
In primary, we teach Spanish from Reception to Year 6 using a variety of games, songs, rhymes and books to engage the students in their acquisition of new vocabulary. We use these methods to develop their confidence in each of the four language skills at the appropriate levels (speaking, listening, reading and writing).
I would like to introduce my friend ‘Roberta’. Our Reception students have already met her and know that they have to speak in Spanish when she is around. That is the only way that she can understand us as she can’t speak English. However, when our Year 6 are being Spanish linguists, they are discovering the meaning of new vocabulary using their inference skills as well as using sentence stems to develop their confidence in their journey of expressing their own thoughts in Spanish.
We are all so proud of the effort and good attitude that our students have regarding learning Spanish as a Modern Foreign Language at BLC.
