SSC Curriculum

Key skills

Students will receive daily lessons in the core subjects of Maths, English, and ICT. These subjects will be accredited and accessible at a range of levels. The emphasis will be firmly placed upon developing functional literacy and numeracy skills, as well offering wider academic and personal enrichment. Where possible these skills will be taught in modules to allow for movement of students between organisations.

 

Life skills

 The SSC programme will cover other aspects of the curriculum including PHSC, careers and citizenship. Aspects of this course are accredited by ASDAN and Duke of Edinburgh Award. Work in these sessions will be heavily focused on building positive behaviours. Topics include

  • Anger management
  • Building positive relationships
  • Building positive learning behaviours
  • Developing appropriate out of school behaviours/ positive life choices
  • Managing change
  • Developing resilience
  • Improving and understanding self-esteem
  • Independence skills
  • Working with others
  • Problem solving

 

Enhanced skills

 Students will enhance their curriculum by choosing from a range of elective subjects.  These change every 12 weeks and will also be accredited where possible.  Examples of these include

  • Environmental studies
  • Volunteering group
  • Sport
  • Construction
  • Art
  • Mechanics
  • Cooking
