Mr Radford, Mrs Healan, Mr Trudgen, Mr Young, Mr Carson and Mr Archer (our School Sports Co-ordinator) make up the physical education team at BLC.
The department has a full-size sports hall; extensive playing fields; an all-weather floodlit, Astroturf pitch and a hard-court Multi-Use Games Area. We also have use of the international-standard City of Bristol Gymnastics Centre, which shares our site.
All students in Phase 3 get four lessons of PE each fortnight. The curriculum is organised so that they have six-week blocks of each activity. Over the course of phase 3 all students will have learned the basic rules, tactics and skills of a number of team games, such as rugby, football, netball, basketball, hockey, lacrosse, cricket, softball and rounders. They will also have had at least two six-week blocks of gymnastics in the City of Bristol Gymnastics Centre, and at least two blocks of other individual sports such as athletics, badminton and tennis.
Most of our Phase 4 students will also have four lessons of core PE each fortnight, although some students on college courses will only have 3 lessons. Students in phase 4 are also able to choose to study the OCR National Award in Sport, which gives them up to another ten lessons of PE each fortnight. In core PE all students are offered a choice of activities each lesson. Each term we offer three or four choices of activity, including all of the ones that they have studied in phase 3 and adding new opportunities such as sports leadership skills, dance, Ultimate Frisbee and trampolining, for example.
We enter teams and individuals in as many of Wesport's schools' competitions as we can, covering all of the winter and summer team games and many individual sports and activities. For example, our Y9 girls are currently champions of all Bristol schools in football and rounders. If enough pupils show an interest, we enter them in competition. All students also have the opportunity to come to after-school recreational opportunities, in Tuesday's extended learning sessions and in clubs on other days after school.
