Within the Inclusion Department we support children who have both learning and behaviour needs. Support is offered in a variety of ways; we offer small group 1:1 support, sometimes our support is targeted within the classroom, or accessed through a key adult at break and lunch time.
If a student's needs dictate it, they are allocated a key worker who will check in with them on a regular basis, and also try to develop links with home. We keep a register of students with special needs and they are graded according to national criteria. Students at the highest level of need will have Personal Learning Plans from the special educational needs team, and these will be monitored and reviewed on a regular basis in consultation with parents and students.
Staff on the team have lots of experience in working with students with additional needs. They have gained this both through formal training, working in schools and also from outside agency support. We have a lot of outside agencies who work with us in school to support the children. We take advice from CAMHS team, autistic spectrum disorder, visual impairment, hearing impairment, behavioural improvement team, learning improvement team and work closely with the Educational Psychologist. We employ a Speech and Language therapist.
Anne Bruce is SENCo and is the dyslexia specialist and also applies for examination concessions for those students who need this. Dina Radford is SENCo and she works as specialist learning support, particularly with Phase 4 students - she does a lot towards transition for our students moving from Phase 3 and Phase 4 and working out Options. Where possible visiting them within their primary school. At the end of Phase 4 we link with FE colleges with relevant information. Sarah Cheshire is Inclusion Leader for the whole campus, and has worked as SENCo & Assistant Head in primary.
Ray Cockram and Sally Wilkey have specialism in building self esteem, anger management and mentoring. They engage their children through a variety of very practical activities, such as media, enterprise and life skills. The rest of the Inclusion Team who support specific subjects or students are: Carly Williams, Geraldine McCoy, Tina Duval, Mandy Cooper, Elizabeth MacAndrew, Jenny Gill, Leah Reading, Sara Darnley, Pauline Ecclestone. Between them they have special interest in visual impairment, autistic spectrum disorder, literacy, hearing impairment, Numeracy and these talents are deployed to support the children. We are linked to the team of Deputy head of house who have a particular focus on the pastoral and behaviour support. For children who need extra support, we offer a supportive transfer to secondary with extra days and visits.
