Equality Statement

  • Inclusion lies at the heart of the ethos and culture of the Bridge Learning Campus.

We are committed to ensuring that all of our children and young people can realise their potential as learners and good citizens irrespective of their sex, race, disability, religion or belief and sexual orientation.

The Bridge has a unique opportunity to challenge discrimination of any kind by displaying the tolerance and understanding which is the foundation for an inclusive and open community.

The schools which work on the campus are predominantly white British and one of our key themes has been to open our children's minds to multiculturalism and what it is like to live in, and contribute to, multi ethnic Britain.

Last year we were concerned by some incidents of racism and intolerance by some students and this led to a close working relationship with SARI (Support Against Racist Incidents).

This was to help support our staff and our curriculum in countering any racist behaviour and also to promote the understanding and tolerance that is at the heart of this statement.

I addition, all schools are concerned to ensure that children and young people are protected from bullying and our anti-bullying policy and practice is regularly reviewed to ensure consistency of approach. Policies linked to this web page provide parents with information on these policies hand how we implement these aims.

Another key driver for is the setting up of inclusive activities and curriculum opportunities. At the Bridge we have an Inclusion Steering Group, Chaired by senior staff, which promotes and coordinates inclusive activity.

Equality policy and practice covers many different aspects of the work at the Bridge, from curriculum design and delivery; pastoral support and tutoring and the recruitment and training of staff.

We are in the process of moving from a Trust school to an Academy and our policies for this change are currently under review. We have attached existing policies that are linked to equality, but these will be updated as we approach September 2012.

Another area which we need to consider in relation to equality is that of our core purpose - Learning. The schools on the campus have improvement plans which direct much of their work and prioritise resources. These plans are linked to data received from national sources such as the Department of Education and Ofsted.
